What is The Picture Chronicle?

Hi, I’m Stu Hunnable—a UK-born, and now UK-based (but previously Canadian-based) father, husband, and audio drama director, and THE PICTURE CHRONICLE is the newsletter through which I get to funnel many of my creative energies. I’ve worked—for much of my career—in illustration and cartooning, and have always had a keen interest in photography, and film, and this publication allows me to explore all of these interests in one hallowed space (owing a huge debt of gratitude to the usefully diverse word, “picture”). All of this is done with the hope of bringing a little delight to your day in the process.

Maybe a tad more detail?

Of course, glad you asked. Well, you’ll find THE PICTURE CHRONICLE is made up of six main types of articles:

  1. PHOTO-JOURNAL: this is where I journal—or chronicle—what’s going on in my life lately, combined with some of my recent photography.

  2. LIFE, ILLUSTRATED: anecdotal ponderings on my life, and life at large, accompanied by an illustration.

  3. PHOTO-FOLIO: a collection, or series, of my some of my photography, around a theme.

  4. CARTOON SECTION: single-panel (plus the occasional two-panel) cartoons I’ve created. Humour abounds.

  5. COMICS PAGE: comic strips I’ve created. Again, humour abounds.

  6. PICTURE-WATCHING: I’m a fan of old movies—and this is where I review them. Humour less so abounds.

Is this actually all you?

I feel like, in the times we now find ourselves, this question is the “elephant in the room” that really should be addressed up front, and so, yes—the concepts, writing, artwork, and photography are all my own work (unless I am specifically utilising another person’s work for reference, in which case I would always credit them). I don’t use generative AI for any part of my creative process. I genuinely intend no judgement for people who do, but, for me personally, it’s important that THE PICTURE CHRONICLE is an outlet for my own personal creativity, and I’m keen to not muddy the waters in any way on that front.

A big part of doing a project like this—for me—is to create a sincere connection with the readers of the publication, and so I want you to know that what you see, and read, within THE PICTURE CHRONICLE is totally coming from the peculiar brain, and the particular hand, of me, Stu Hunnable.

Why subscribe?

I pour my heart and soul into my creative projects, and THE PICTURE CHRONICLE is no exception. I’m not particularly interested in generating content—my intention is for this thing to become something quite special: both for me, as a labour of love. And for you, as a place to think, to laugh, and to take a breath.

For the time being, I’m going to post monthly, and, by subscribing, you’ll get every new edition straight to your inbox. It’s definitely the best way to get all my posts, to see what I’m up to, and to support me along the way. Subscribing gives you full access to THE PICTURE CHRONICLE, and to what some people (more specifically, me, in the ad below) are calling: “a special case of subscriber-vibe!”
