COMICS PAGE: Super Scrupulous #1
Blood Drive
Welcome to Super Scrupulous—the comic side-project that I’ve been developing on and off (emphasis on the off) for the last—dare I say—25 years or so!
To be fair, much of that 25 years was spent on different iterations of what has now since become Super Scrupulous. And it’s always been something that’s had to be squeezed in around the busyness of my day-to-day life. But, over time, it’s turned into something I’m really quite happy with!
My concise description of this project is that it’s “a comiky cacophony of constant caped-correctness”. But, to describe it in a little more detail (and with a little less alliteration): it’s a comic about Captain Captivate - a local superhero (side note: he’s not particularly super) who’s in constant pursuit of correctness, with a fixation on doing things right - often to a fault - both in terms of his own actions, and also the actions of his fellow citizens of Braxfield City.
So that’s it in a nutshell. But, there’s a little more to it than that though. This comic represents aspects of my own personal journey of dealing with certain struggles, anxieties, and idiosyncrasies within myself, that have brought me to the realisation that, as the saying goes, “the road to hell is often paved with good intentions”. And so, on some levels, this project is a way for me to explore this weird, seemingly contradictory aspect of human nature that I can certainly observe when I reflect on my own life. But I’ve also come to notice that—when you’re attuned to it—it’s not at all uncommon to see these same tendencies play out in society at large. And, in this sense, there’s a bit of a social commentary dimension to Super Scrupulous, if you look a little further beyond the surface.
I originally released this first episode on November 6th, 2019, on Instagram, which unfortunately was just before the algorithm changes that caused organic discoverability on the platform to severely drop off, leaving the comic with very little scope to find an audience. And, over time, Instagram just proved not to be quite the right avenue for it anyway, on numerous levels.
THE PICTURE CHRONICLE, however, feels like a perfect fit. And so, here goes the second launch of Super Scrupulous! Hope you enjoy it!
